Exemplary Epics

During the first half of this course, we have a read a multitude of long poems which we have termed “epics.” While appreciating the different textures of each of these works, you have also found similarities that have encouraged you to think about what David Damrosch has termed “reading across time,” “across culture,” and “through translation.”

In an essay of 1500 words, your aim is to compare two exemplary moments that you will analyze in order to reflect on the broader category of the epic. Your two textual examples may be drawn from the same work, or two different works. The paper will be assessed on the the subtlety and creativity of the close reading and the engagement with larger issues raised by our class discussions and outside readings.
