In the past month we have read a large number of allegories from the Islamic World and the Medieval West. Write an essay that compares two of these works. You may choose two write an essay of the following kind:
- A comparison between two premodern texts (i.e. Attar and the Romance of the Rose)
- A comparison between a premodern text and a modern allegorical work of your own choice (e.g. Romance of the Rose/Animal Farm).
Some questions to consider: Why do you consider both of the works you have chosen to be allegories? Is allegory a rhetorical device or is it something different? If so, how would you define it? What do you imagine to be the similarities and differences between the pre-modern allegories we read in this class and modern allegorical works? In what way is it true to say that all reading is an allegorical?
